LOCAL WATER MAIN MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED

LOCAL WATER MAIN MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED – Report dated  18/4/17

South West Water has finished its village pipe repairs for now but still has some concerns about the twice-burst pipeline which caused a week of disruption down the village high street.

The first burst, on Graybridge Road, was reported on Monday April 10 and repaired overnight, the company says, and the footpath was reinstated on the Wednesday.

Then the contractors were sent back in on Easter Sunday and spent a full day outside 48 Station Road.

The ground there has to be given time to settle before the footpath is reinstated, later this week.

Becky Moran, communications officer for South West Water, said: “Bursts can be caused by a number of factors including ground movement due to weather, vehicle movements and third-party damage. Unfortunately, it is not unusual for a burst on one section of pipe to be followed by a burst on another section of the same pipe.

“Following the bursts, we are currently investigating the feasibility of replacing this section of pipe.

“It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of most bursts (except those caused by third party damage) but it’s probable that whatever caused a first burst contributed to the next on pipes made of the same materials, laid in similar conditions and subject to the same external circumstances.”
