Canvassers have been around the village looking for customers for milk delivered the old way – to the doorstep in returnable glass bottles.

The business behind the push is milk&more, formerly a subsidiary of Dairy Crest, absorbed into Muller UK in 2015.

It has an existing Horrabridge round, built on the old Dairy Crest customer base.

It costs a little more than buying from the shops but offers online account and ordering control and dozens of products besides milk, including bread, tea, juice, bacon and even compost – see

However, although a lot of Devon farms feed into Muller, the scale and centralisation of its processing operations mean there is no direct link between local farms and local doorsteps. Muller’s nearest milk plant is Bridgewater and its raw milk is pooled from a wide area before treatment.

There is a more local alternative – Underdown Dairy of Exbourne, near Okehampton, which is based on a farm run by the Dunn family, supplied by its own cows and run by the family and neighbours. It does not yet have a website but inquiries can be made by email – to – or by phone, to 01837 851271.

* Underdown Dairy delivers a range of dairy products to Horrabridge on Tuesdays and Fridays, including milk in recyclable plastic containers.
