Tavistock area’s only open chess clubs, far as we know, are looking for new members.
The West Dartmoor U3A Chess Club club meets once a fortnight on a Wednesday morning, 10-12.
Membership is free to anyone who is or becomes a member of the West Dartmoor branch of the U3A (originally the University of the 3rd Age) or the Tavistock branch – currently costing about £15 a year.
Organiser Peter Norman says: “We usually meet in each other’s homes, so we keep the group small, but we are down to half a dozen regulars and we would welcome three or four more.
“We are a U3A group because we always have been, and we like the accreditation of U3A membership. But there is no need to get involved in anything other than playing chess if you don’t want to. All levels of player welcome – we all still play like beginners quite often.”
Some of the Tavistock players also play in the Horrabridge Times Chess Club, which is not U3A affiliated and meets every Monday – currently at the Walkhampton Inn, from 6.30 pm.
“Just turn up, get a beer (or coffee) and join in,” says organiser Brian Pitchford.
