Event: Dry Stone Walling Course

Where: Postbridge, Dartmoor

When: 15th & 16th June (9 – 4.30PM)

Description: This is a 2 day dry stone walling course for beginners with an experienced tutor covering all of the basic skills required to build or repair a dry stone wall. The training is undertaken as part of a small group in stunning locations and a certificate of attendance is issued on completion of the course. It is suitable for beginners and those with some experience of walling.

Event: Plant Identification and Grassland Assessment and Monitoring Workshop for Beginners

Where: Buckland in the Moor, Dartmoor

When: Sunday 8th July – Buckland-in-the-Moor

On this workshop, led by accomplished ecologist Hannah Gibbons, you’ll learn which plants help to signify whether a grassland is ‘improved’, ‘semi-improved’ or ‘unimproved’ and how to identify these plants. The day will help you assess the status of grassland plant communities and give you the skills to monitor the vegetation from one year to the next. This workshop is designed for beginners but would suit those who would like a refresher.

Duration: 10.30 – 3.30 PM

Cost: £8, including coffee on arrival, all hand-outs and use of a hand lens for the day.

Event: Meadow Grasses Identification Workshop for Beginners

Where: Buckland, Dartmoor

When: Friday 20 July (10.30 – 3.30 PM)

To create a thriving wildflower meadow it is very useful to know one grass from the next. This workshop will help you to identify a broad group of common species helping you to make informed decisions about the management or restoration to a meadow grassland. We will also look at ‘typical’ species for Dartmoor’s dry meadows. The morning will be spent studying grasses at an indoor venue at Buckland. From there we will walk half a mile to visit three outstanding Dartmoor wildflower meadows, identifying grasses in the field.

Event: The Art of Scything

Where: Brimpts Farm, Dartmeet, Dartmoor

When: 2nd August 2018 (10AM – 4PM)

In recent years the art of scything has made a comeback and this workshop will introduce you to the

art form using modern Austrian scythes. These are a low tech, low carbon and quiet alternatives to modern machinery. The course is suited to beginners as well as those with some experience looking to improve their technique. The training is led by Chris Riley of Pratensis who will equip participants we will also be joined by Donna Cox of the Moor Meadows group to discuss the wildflower meadows at Brimpts Farm and identify some of the key species.

Event: Newtake Stone Walling Course

Where: Gidleigh, Dartmoor

When: 17th & 18th August (overnight camping)

Description: This is a unique 2 day walling course for beginners working on a newtake walls in one of the remotest and stunning areas of Dartmoor. An unusual location supported by the National Park. We will camp out overnight with food provided but you will need a tent! The training is undertaken as part of a small group and a certificate of attendance is issued on completion of the course. It is suitable for beginners and those with some experience of walling.

Event: Devon Stone Faced Hedgebank Course

Where: Throwleigh, Dartmoor

When: 27th & 28th September (9 – 4.30PM daily))

Description: This is a 2 day course for beginners working on a traditional Devon bank. This is a different skill to dry stone walling and participants will learn how to work with an earth core from foundations up. The training is undertaken as part of a small group in stunning locations and a certificate of attendance is issued on completion of the course. It is suitable for beginners and those with some experience of walling.

Event: Hedge Steeping or Laying Course

Where: Scorriton, Dartmoor

When: 21st and 22nd September (9 – 4.30PM daily))

Description: This is a 2 day course for beginners in the art of steeping or hedge laying. Participants will learn the key skills to restore a woody hedgerow. The training is undertaken as part of a small group in stunning locations and a certificate of attendance is issued on completion of the course.
