New film about yachtsman Donald Crowhurst, played by Colin Firth, is at Meavy Hall tonight from 6. The Wharf has the new Freddie Mercury film Bohemian Rhapsody running through to next Friday.

Horrabridge At War exhibition in the parish hall this Saturday and Sunday – see separate story, to follow Friday evening, with pictures. Meanwhile, this seems like a good moment to pass on high praise for Peter Jackson’s new film, They Shall Not Grow Old, currently touring – a chronicle of WW1 built out of miles of documentary footage, edited, enhanced, coloured in and given voices, to startling effect.

The Kit Hillbillies brought a few guests with them from Bere Alston and beyond to join up with 60 or more locals for a rollicking evening of Americana and folk in the Leaping Salmon last Sunday and a rebook is certain. One of the hits of the evening was their localised version of I Been Everywhere Man, which has been adapted ever since it was written by an Aussie, with Aussie place names, in 1959. The Hillbillies’ version is still evolving, but you can catch a recording including Horrabridge and neighbours here

Tomorrow (Saturday Nov 3) top Cornish guitarist Philip Henry is at Calstock Arts … sample here

Fans of all that sort of stuff might also be interested in Sarah McQuaid, touring with material from a new album, If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous and playing The Plough at Great Torrington on Sunday (Nov 4). Try her here

Monday (Nov 5), Horrabridge’s resident inventor, Joe Toland, will be talking about his green energy ideas and more at The Wharf from 2.

Another Food For Thought night in St John’s Church on Thursday (Nov 8) – optional meal by local chef Will Hay from 6 and free talk from 7.

Next Friday evening from 6.30 (Nov 9), Wildwood Arts on Chapel Lane are throwing open their doors and inviting all in for wine, nibbles, and a preview of their winter exhibition, running daily from then until Christmas Eve. Nice cards, jewellery, ceramics and so on, by the best of local artists, also on sale.
